MPL at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for rounds 10, 11, & 12

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a home away from home for me.  After a rough run in Canada, I was looking to bounce back and get my championship going in the right way. The weekend of course started poorly with a faulty air compressor for the pneumatic shifter. Missed the first practice with something that will comeback later.  Then of course the car would not find a gear for qualifying, and I had to start at the back for the first of the three races.  I started P16 and made a slow and steady run to the front.  With only the real run time being in the second practice we still found a fast car to use.  I got up to fourth and then at the top of the corkscrew found the second place car facing backwards.  My competitor and I running third and fourth, passed by without incident and then raced down turn 9.  I made a move with the momentum gained into turn 11 and gained 2nd!  The checkered came out that lap and I couldn’t believe it.  We went from P16 to P2!  Checkout the video highlights from the race on my YouTube channel.

The next day we started P2 and got a good start chasing first.  Half way through the race the leader lost his motor and I inherited first.  I put my head down, but as the race progressed I noticed I couldn’t get the car to make the shift down from third to second going in to the corkscrew and turn 11.  I made a couple of mistakes because of the lack of shifting and second quickly caught me.  On the final lap I ran wide at the exit of turn 11 trying to get the car down into first gear.  My competitor got a good run and we drag raced for the finish. I took FIRST by .077 of a second, and won my first race of the year.  I ended a JDC 28 race win streak. Big thanks to the guys at Extreme Speed Motorsports for helping me get the win. The third race was also a great success.  Starting P2 again I got a good start, but lost second early in the race.  I couldn’t get the spot back and finished P3.  It was a amazing weekend with friends and family.  I got to stand on all three podium spots throughout the weekend.  Now we move on to the grand finale at Road Atlanta.
