The United States Touring Car Championship started for Whelden in round 2 at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. It was a hot weekend with temperatures in the high nineties. Michael was driving the Life’s Good Racing #10 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart in the Touring Car class. The car is AWD and turbo charged, which posses a unique opportunity to learn new driving techniques. Whelden rose to the challenge in magnificent fashion with running the fastest times in every session throughout the weekend. Michael took pole position in qualifying on Saturday and lead every lap to win the qualifying race that afternoon. Sunday possessed a more challenging format with a 45 minute feature race. With high temperatures it was imperative to keep the car and driver cool. Whelden had to avoid a stalled car on the standing start, to then have to defend the lead into turn one from his teammate. Whelden defended all the way to turn four when the field settled into single file and Michael started to build a lead. With lap times over a second a lap faster Whelden amassed a large lead. He lead every lap in his class and took home the win. A big thanks to team sponsors Competition Clutch and HAWK Performance brake pads for their support and outstanding products. Michael Whelden now looks to round 3 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the Monterey Peninsula of California July 31- Aug 2.
